The Tar Heel 10 Miler race will affect traffic on campus and in Chapel Hill the morning of Saturday, April 23. With 7,000 runners participating, there will be many road closures and traffic diversions/detours that you should be aware of.

Road Closures

Raleigh Road

Raleigh Road will be completely closed to traffic between Country Club Road and the intersection of US 15/501. The roadways will clear and normal traffic is expected to resume by 10 a.m. Electronic signage will be placed on US 15/501 and NC 54 during race week to remind motorists of this important road closure.

Other Road Closures

All other roads along the course will be closed and then re-opened on a rolling basis as the runners pass by the various areas on the course. Most road closures will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

  • Franklin Street/Downtown (Estes Drive to Merritt Mill Rd)
  • Historic Rosemary
  • Battle Park
  • Gimghoul Road
  • Greenwood Road
  • Laurel Hill

Stadium Drive

Stadium Drive will be utilized for the Tar Heel 10 Miler race. Consequently, set-up will begin on a section of Stadium Drive on Friday, April 22, 2016. Stadium Drive will return to normal operations at noon on Saturday.

Transportation

Chapel Hill Transit Routes Affected: Saturday FG and T

  • The FG route will be detoured from 8:50 a.m. through 10 a.m. The westbound bus stops on Raleigh Road from Greenwood Road to Country Club Road and on South Road from Country Club Road to Raleigh Street will not be served during these times.
  • The T route will not serve Franklin Street (Varsity), Cameron Avenue and Hillsborough Street from 8:15 a.m. through 9:13 a.m.
