The Tar Heel Bikes bikeshare program has a new look and new bikes! The University is partnering with Bird (which has acquired Spin) to continue bikeshare service for students, faculty and staff, and the local community. As part of this transition, Bird is providing a new fleet of 100 electric assist bikes that can be used across campus. The bikes include an onboard display, high visibility LEDs, front-mounted baskets, smooth pneumatic tires, easy adjust seats, step through accessible frames, high-powered electric motors, 20% climbing grade, dual kickstands and electric pedal assist.
The cost to ride remains the same at $1 to unlock the e-bike plus a charge of 29 cents per minute of use. Riders can also purchase a flat rate monthly pass for $6.99 plus 29 cents per minute of use with no additional unlock fee. Users who are new to Bird at Carolina can get $5 off their first ride by using the code UNCBIKE in the Bird app. Users with the Spin or Lyft apps can rent Bird bikes through these apps as well.
As a reminder, under the University’s Parking Ordinance, e-bikes may be operated on campus sidewalks and walkways, but riders should remember that pedestrians have the right-of-way. When operated on roadways, riders should ride on the right in the same direction as other traffic and obey all traffic signs and signals. When ending a bike trip, users should park e-Bikes at a Bird parking corral or a campus bike rack. Bikes should not be parked against or attached to trees or other foliage, sign or lamp posts, railings or seating fixtures, or in a manner that will interfere with pedestrian traffic.
