Local Transit

Chapel Hill Transit provides fare-free bus service between the University, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro. Park-and-Ride lots are available for daytime riders (parking permits are required).

Regional Transit

GoTriangle is currently fare-free. Eligible commuters may obtain a free bus pass to commute to UNC-Chapel Hill on PART Express and Orange County Public Transportation. Students who do not meet the eligibility criteria may qualify for a student discount. Check the transit websites for details.

GoTriangle is currently considering whether to resume bus fares after June 30, 2023. More information will be communicated regarding future bus pass options once GoTriangle provides details.
  • Must live off campus
  • Must forgo an on-campus daytime parking permit
  • Must be a UNC-Chapel Hill student or employee paid directly by the University or Hospitals (ineligible employees include UTS and visiting scholars)

The Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) connects UNC-Chapel Hill to Greensboro, Burlington, Graham, and Mebane with Route 4. UNC-Chapel Hill provides an XPass to ride fare-free.

Obtaining an XPass

  • Complete PART’s registration form. Eligibility will be verified by UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Riders may select the Umo mobile app for immediate use, or a Smartcard can be mailed.
  • PART will send an email with instructions to activate the XPass with the app or Smartcard.

Free Park-and-Rides

PART provides free Park-and-Ride lots along I-40.

GoTriangle provides direct bus service to UNC-Chapel Hill’s main campus from Durham, Raleigh, and Hillsborough.

Durham / Morrisville / Cary / Apex commuters
  • American Tobacco Deck (downtown Durham) is served by Route 400 and Route 405.
  • Patterson Place (15-501 in Durham) is served by Route 400.
  • Regional Transit Center is served by Route 800.
  • Southpoint Mall / Renaissance Village is served by Route 800/800S.
  • Woodcroft area (no official Park-and-Ride) is served by Route 805.
Hillsborough / Efland commuters

Free to Ride

Obtaining an OPass

  • Complete the OPass registration form. Eligibility will be verified by UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • UNC-Chapel Hill will email riders with instructions to activate the OPass in the Umo mobile app.

  • Durham Tech Orange County Campus provides free parking for transit riders.
