Employees, students and visitors are encouraged to explore all available parking and transportation options.
Departments receive parking allotments and establish parking allocation guidelines to determine how parking will be distributed within the department. Each department also has an assigned Parking and Transportation Coordinator who assists employees in obtaining a permit or in finding an alternative commuting options through the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP).
Students are eligible to apply for parking permits based on class and resident/commuter status. Each student parking allotment group establishes criteria for assignment of the available parking permits.
Parking allotments for students are divided into the following groups:
- Business School (MBA & MAC)
- Law School
- Med I & II
- Med III & IV
First-year students are not eligible for parking permits on campus unless authorized by the Office of Accessibility Resources & Service.
Short-term parking is available throughout the academic and healthcare campuses to accommodate visitors and patients. Visitor/patient parking provides proximate hourly and daily parking options. Other transportation options include local and regional transit, Park & Ride at local Town lots, and rideshare matching.
UNC provides transportation accommodations for employees and students who have mobility impairments. The Accessibility Transportation and Parking Application can be printed off or picked up in-person at the Public Safety Building on Manning Drive.
UNC hosts a wide variety of events on campus including sports, concerts, plays, and VIP guests. Events frequently impact transportation, parking, and security on campus. Departments hosting events will need to register the event. UNC hosts major performing arts and athletic events with significant impacts that include:
- Men’s Basketball
- Women’s Basketball
- Memorial Hall
- Paul Green Theater
- Ackland Art Museum

Each department has a Transportation and Parking Coordinator that assists employees as a liaison between the department and UNC Parking and Transportation Services. Transportation & Parking Coordinators can log in to make parking assignments, check waiting lists, etc.
